The story of the game was the Rush battling from behind all night as every time they tied it, the Swarm would go ahead. The Rush never had the lead and kept having to come back from one goal deficits. Every time the game was tied, the Rush were unable to go ahead. Continuing their power-play struggles, the Rush had a couple of late power-play chances to tie it but couldn't capitalize.
Before the clock even started, Ryan Cousins, captain of the Swarm, and the Rush's Trent Smalley, had the first fight in Rush history. Consequently, both players were thrown out of the game before it even started. The Swarm got the first goal 2:51 into the game on a power-play goal by Kelly Hall, his team leading 8th of the year. The Rush continued to struggle killing penalties and gave up 3 in the game. Edmonton pressed and was able to tie it up on an end-to-end rush by Chris McElroy, his 2nd of the season. With the momentum swinging their way, the Rush went on a 4 minute power-play, including 44 seconds up 5 on 3, but couldn't score, ending the game 0 for 8 on with the man advantage.
The Swarm got their second goal of the game in the second quarter 6 minutes in, again on the power-play, but the Rush battled back again to tie it with a goal by Brad Dairon midway through the quarter. The goalies then dominated the rest of the half, leaving the score tied at 2 entering halftime.
The Swarm scored early in the 2nd half, just 1:48 in, but Jimmy Quinlan capped off an impressive play and shot to even it again, this time at 3 apiece. Minnesota went ahead again, and the Rush evened it up at 4 midway through the quarter on a goal by Kevin Howard. With less than a minute left in the 3rd quarter, the Swarm went ahead 5-4 on a goal by Nolan Heavenor, brother of Rush forward Tyler. It felt like home for the Heavenor brothers, as they had 30 family members in attendance.
Relentlessly, the Rush battled back again to tie it at 5 midway through the final quarter. With under 5 minutes to go, the Swarm got their 6th of the night from Jamie Taylor. Then with a minute left Brock Boyle sealed the Rush's fate, putting the Swarm ahead for good, 7-5. The Rush and leading scorer Jimmy Quinlan would make it close, scoring with 16 seconds left, but it was too late as the Rush fell to 0-5 for the year.
The Rush will be out for revenge next Saturday as they host the Toronto Rock. Game time is 8:30 and it can be seen on Rogers Sportsnet West.
