Rush vs Rock
Toronto (CP) - Aaron Wilson, Josh Sanderson, Colin Doyle and Blaine Manning amassed 36 scoring points as the defending-champion Toronto Rock began the climb out of their early-season National Lacrosse League hole by defeating the new Edmonton Rush 14-8 Friday night.

Wilson had five goals and an assist, Sanderson three goals and eight assists, league scoring leader Doyle three goals and seven assists, and Manning a goal and eight helpers.

Chris Driscoll supplied the other two goals for Toronto (1-4). Bob Watson earned the goaltending win with his best effort of the season.

For Edmonton (0-4), Kevin Howard scored three goals, Jimmy Quinlan two and Randy Daly, Brad Darion and Andy Turner one each.

Toronto scored on each of its first three shots and never relinquished the lead.

Sanderson beat goalie Pat Campbell from the front edge of the crease 25 seconds into the game, Doyle shot into a vacated net at 1:01 with Campbell chasing a loose ball, and Driscoll fired in a long shot at 1:26.

Daly replied for Edmonton, and Quinlan fought Pat Merrill before Toronto jumped ahead 5-1 on goals by Wilson on a power play and by Driscoll while short-handed. Turner got a breakaway pass from Campbell and made a dazzling deke to score, leaving it 5-2 after one quarter.

Quinlan dropped a power-play shot over Watson while being checked into the crease to make it 5-3. It was 8-3 after Wilson got a rebound and lunged into Campbell's crease to score, Sanderson uncorked a sidearm rocket to a top corner of the net, and Wilson connected from the side of the crease on a power play.

The Rush kept battling, and Dairon and Quinlan scored in the last 35 seconds of the second quarter to shave Toronto's lead to 8-5.

Each team scored twice in the third quarter. Manning broke clear to score a power-play goal, Howard dove across the front of Watson's crease to score, Sanderson beat Campbell with another sidearm sizzler, and Howard somehow found a top corner as he was racing past the Toronto net.

Toronto led 10-7 at the start of the fourth. Edmonton was hanging tough, but not for much longer.

Wilson put in a rebound with Campbell on his butt, and Wilson scored his third power-play goal to make it 12-7. Howard got one back. After Toronto's Mat Giles was sent off with a major penalty for hammering Quinlan into the carpet from behind, Doyle scored two short-handed goals to make it 14-8. The first was a contortionist's special from the side of the crease while he was falling, and the next was a sidearm bouncer that caught the far side of the net.

Notes: Toronto's next game is a week Sunday at Calgary ... Edmonton's next game is at home next Friday against Minnesota ... D Rusty Kruger sat this one out because he was suspended for one game for jumping Shawn Evans during a loss in Rochester two weeks ago ... A hand injury kept D Brad MacDonald out ... Campbell was a backup on the 1999 and 2000 championship Rock teams ... Manning, who is from Sherwood Park, Alta., was best man at the wedding of Rush attacker Darren Hillier last summer. They were Jr. A teammates in Victoria.
