Calgary vs Edmonton

Rob Williams

Kevin Howard

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Rush began their three game homestand with a 16-9 loss to the Calgary Roughnecks. The last time they met, the Rush picked up their first ever win in dramatic fashion. This time though, the Roughnecks got revenge, handing the Rush their most lopsided loss of the year.

Leading the way for the Rush were Brad Dairon (3G, 1A) and Jamey Bowen (4A) while Lewis Ratcliff (4G, 2A) lead the Roughnecks to victory. For Bowen, the assists gave him 16 points against the Roughnecks this year. Making his Rush home debut, newcomer Jason Clark added three assists. Edmonton was 3-8 on the powerplay while Calgary was 1-3. The Rush outshot the Roughnecks 58-47.

The Rush came our firing and opened the scoring with goals by Kerry Susheski and Randy Daly, both their tenth. Susheski's goal gave him 11 points in the season series against Calgary. That woke up the Roughnecks as they responded with five straight even-strength goals in under four minutes to take a 5-2 lead after the 1st quarter.

The Roughnecks kept on coming, adding a 6th straight goal, this time shorthanded, in the first minute of the 2nd quarter. The Rush's Brad Dairon then scored twice, giving him ten on the year, but the Roughnecks kept on scoring, adding four more to take a 10-4 lead into the half.

Five minutes into the 3rd quarter goalie Pat Campbell took a ball in the neck and backup Dwight Maetche came in relief. That didn't stop the Roughnecks as they added four more before the quarter was out. The Rush's Mat Giles managed to get his 6th but the Roughnecks took a commanding 14-5 lead to the final quarter.

Randy Daly got his second of the night, Brad Dairon completed his hat trick, and Jimmy Quinlan and Kevin Howard scored to give the Rush nine goals on the night. But the Rush couldn't shut the door, allowing two more goals to make the final 16-9.

That's the last time the two Alberta teams meet this year with the Roughnecks winning the season series 3-1. Trent Smalley of the Rush went after Ryan McNish late in the game as retaliation to McNish's fight with Chris Stachniak last game. The two were separated quickly though, before Smalley could exact revenge. Tempers really flared up to finish the battle of Alberta for this year with a bang. The Rush are now 1-11 on the year.

The Rush continue their homestand next week as they host the Colorado Mammoth on Saturday, Mar. 25 at 7:30pm.
