Rush vs Mammoth

Denver (CP) - The decision to change goaltenders early in the second quarter appeared to swing momentum in favour of the Colorado Mammoth in a National Lacrosse League game Friday night.

Down by one when backup Chris Levis entered the game, the Mammoth went on to score six straight goals and defeat the Edmonton Rush 15-10, handing the visitors their seventh loss in eight games this season.

"This is a great win," said Mammoth coach Gary Gait, who pulled starter Gee Nash with 9:25 left in the first half. "Coming off the all-star break, we were hoping to gain some momentum and I think we've really come together at the half-way point in the season."

The Mammoth, 5-3, improved its lead in the West Division, while the Rush remains buried in the West basement.

After Mat Giles' two goals gave the Rush a 7-6 lead, the Mammoth offence went quickly to work with Levis in net.

Dan Stroup scored the first of his three goals on the night to tie the game, and followed it with a razor-sharp pass from behind the Rush goal that Chris Gill converted for an easy score.

The Mammoth left the floor at the half with a 11-7 lead, earning a standing ovation from the Pepsi Center crowd of 16,732.

Gill scored once in each quarter for a game-high four goals while Mammoth captain Gavin Prout tallied game-highs of six assists and eight points.

Levis was strong in his relief performance, allowing just three goals on 39 shots, to earn his third victory of the season.

Edmonton starter Pat Campbell took the loss and was pulled after giving up 10 goals on 24 shots. He was replaced by Dwight Maetche, who allowed four goals on 30 shots.
