The four participating teams - the North Edmonton Wizards, South Edmonton Warriors, St. Albert Rams and Sherwood Park Titans - each played three round-robin games inside Rexall Place, the home of the Rush. And the action produced by the youngsters was thrilling as they competed with everything they had.
Each team played one game in the morning and then watched the Rush and the visiting Arizona Sting go through their pre-game shootarounds. The tournament resumed in the afternoon and when the round-robin concluded, the Titans (2-1) and Warriors (3-0) were left standing to advance to the championship game to be held at halftime of the Rush/Sting contest.
The Warriors jumped out to a 3-0 lead but the Titans fought back and eventually tied the final 3-3 with less than two minutes remaining. With tight checking taking over in the dying moments, the Rush/GELC Tournament ultimately had co-champions and both teams will receive a championship trophy courtesy of the Rush and Elite Sportswear and Awards.
In addition to playing in the tourney, the four participating teams were part of the pre-game introductions as they welcomed the Rush onto the floor for their game. And the kids proved to be good luck for the Rush as they went on to beat the Sting 11-9.
The Rush and United Cycle teamed up to make the day even more special for the young lacrosse players in the Edmonton area. Eight players who registered for the 2007 GELC season on Saturday at Rexall Place will get their season registration paid for by the Rush plus they'll receive a $200 gift certificate for equipment from United Cycle.
