Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Rush utilized a trade to move up in today's National Lacrosse League Entry Draft and in turn Rush GM/Head Coach Paul Day then selected Steve Hutchins from the Whitby Warriors of the Ontario Junior A League with the No. 15 overall pick (1st pick of the Second Round).
In exchange for the No. 15 pick, the Rush sent the No. 20 overall pick (sixth pick of the Second Round) and defenceman Dan Finck to Boston.
Hutchins captained the Warriors to a fourth-place finish in the OLA regular season and then on to a semifinal berth in the playoffs. The six-foot, 200-pounder led Whitby in scoring with 24 goals and 27 assists for 51 points in 18 games. During the OLA semifinals, Hutchins had a six-goal game against Six Nations.
"We were able to watch him quite a bit and felt we should trade up to get him," said Day. "He's big and fast and really a dynamic scorer. He's got a great outside shot and he can go to the net."
Finck, who was picked up off of waivers from Philadelphia at the start of the 2007 season, played 12 games for the Rush last season, registering one goal and nine assists for 10 points along with 45 loose balls.
Day then traded the Rush's second pick of the Second Round, sending the No. 25 overall pick to Philadelphia in exchange for the No. 45 overall pick (third pick of Fourth round) and the Wings' second-round pick in the 2008 NLL Entry Draft.
With the No. 34 overall pick, the Rush selected Edmonton native John Lintz from the Coquitlam Adanacs of the B.C. Junior A League. The six-foot-three, 190-pounder scored five goals and added 10 assists for 15 points to go with 42 penalty minutes in 21 regular-season games. The left-handed defenceman chipped in one goal and six assists for seven points in nine playoff games.
At No. 45 with the pick acquired earlier in the day from Philadelphia, the Rush chose Steve Conrad, the captain of the Clarington Green Gaels of the Ontario Junior B League. In 20 regular-season games, the six-foot-three, 235-pound defenceman put up 17 goals and 10 assists for 27 points.
Three picks later at No. 48, the Rush selected lefty Dan Hartzell from St. Andrew's College of Laurinberg, North Carolina. The native of Lacombe, AB, capped his senior season with the Knights by scoring 31 goals (including three game-winners) with nine assists for 40 points - tops among St. Andrew's midfielders. Hartzell was named to the NCAA Div. II Second Team All-Midfield and to the USILA All-American Team.
"Dan had a great summer winning the President's Cup Senior B National Championship with the Sherwood Park Outlaws and he's going to get a good opportunity with us," noted Day.
With the No. 62 overall pick, the Rush went back to the Coquitlam Adanacs roster and plucked off the team's second-leading scorer, Calvin Craig. In 21 regular-season games, Craig racked up 35 goals and 27 assists for 62 points - the ninth-best total in the B.C. Junior A League. The six-foot, 185-pounder, who could turn out be the steal of the draft as a Fifth Round selection, added 20 points on nine goals and 11 assists in nine playoff games.
And in the Sixth Round with their final selection at No. 76 overall, the Rush picked forward Jordan Coffey who plays with the Brampton Excelsiors of the Ontario Junior A League and the Brock University Badgers. In 18 regular-season games with Brampton, Coffey scored 12 goals with 19 assists for 31 points.
"He's a 20-year-old with another year of junior eligibility so he's someone who we'll be looking for in the future," said Day, who was pleased with the Rush's draft-day results.
"We got a little younger in the offensive end which we wanted to do and got a couple of very creative guys. And we got some toughness in Conrad and Lintz so I think we accomplished what we wanted to."
