After scoring six goals in last night’s win, rookie sensation Mark Matthews had five more goals to help the Edmonton Rush (3-4) earn a weekend sweep and get back into the mix in the West Division standings with a 14-7 road win over the Colorado Mammoth (2-4) at Pepsi Center on Saturday night.
Both offenses struggled early on as Colorado’s Mat MacLeod opened the scoring 6:30 into the game before John Grant, Jr. and Richard Morgan both scored over the next 1:17 to make it 3-0.
Edmonton stopped the run with two goals to cut the deficit to 3-2 after the first quarter. From there, it was all Rush as they scored three goals in the first 3:43 of the second quarter and never trailed again.
With a 5-4 halftime lead, Edmonton extended the margin to 7-5 after the third quarter. In the final 15 minutes, the floodgates opened for the Rush as they scored four unanswered in the first 2:37 of the fourth quarter to go up 11-5.
After Grant, Jr. scored twice to get his hat trick and cut the lead to 11-7 with less than 10 minutes left, the Rush closed the game out on a three-goal run for a total of seven fourth-quarter goals.
Edmonton goalie Aaron Bold was strong with 35 saves on 42 shots while Colorado goaltenders Matt Roik and Dan Lewis combined for just 39 stops on 53 shots.
Matthews finished with a game-high six points (5+1) while teammate Corey Small added five points (1+4). Adam Jones led all Mammoth scores with four points (2+2).
